“Master your thinking – Master your life.”
CBT Masters #2 – Triple Column Technique
In the second instalment of our, “CBT Masters Series,” we dive deep into the Triple Column Technique as designed by Dr. David Burns. This is a follow-up to our previous episode dedicated to defining common cognitive distortions.
Real World Application
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has few limits in terms of where it can be applied. Traditionally, CBT was utilized as an augmenting tool in the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder. Early theorists noticed that those experiencing a dysphoric episode, expressed distinct patters in thought, separate from the general population. These pattens were later conceptualized as, ‘cognitive distortions,’ that directly impact mood.
While the approach does not promote itself as a singular method in the treatment of Mood Disorders, it does provide a framework for treating acquired patterns and beliefs supporting persistent depressive symptoms. Moreover, most clinicians use the tools to augment both behavioural interventions and pharmacotherapy.
In an effort to make the material even more approachable, our team got together and created two examples based on their own personal experience. You will hear the following in the episode today :
- Athletic Identity: It is easy to get wrapped up in your identity as a runner. If you run, you know the consuming nature of the sport (in a good way, of course). However, during the normal lows of a runner’s life, it is easy to get down on yourself for decreased performance, both perceived and physiological (V02Max). Distortions in thought are common and difficult to battle.
- Weight Management: The media is not kind to anyone carrying around a few extra pounds. Weight ideals are frequently distorted and even detrimental to health. Battling against, ‘fat shaming,’ requires an honest look at our own maladaptive thinking about weight and body image. How we approach weight management is dependent on how we think about weight gain. Profound thought distortions launch every weight loss journey off on the wrong foot with unrealistic expectations for change.
